War rumors run rampant

Everyone take note -- in times of national emergency and war it's natural to get bombarded by all manner of unsubstantiated rumors. Given the Internet's strong role in disseminating information, chances are these rumors will get added credibility as they are repeated from site to site.

The first one of this war: rumors that Iraqi Deputy PM Tareq Aziz was captured or shot down. It's not true.

For the record, I will not "report" rumors until substantiated by multiple sources, including Reuters and the BBC. In their rush to "scoop" each other, media outlets will spit out all sorts of garbage (oftentimes aided and abetted by the Pentagon and Iraqi propaganda machines), and I don't want to help perpetuate that disinformation. When possible, I'll try to squash the patently false rumors.

Otherwise, don't expect this site to be at the forefront of every bit of news. War is messy business enough without people adding to the fog of war.
